What does the implant procedure involve?
If you decide dental implants are right for you, we’ll first give you a comprehensive oral health assessment to check that your mouth is healthy. This may involve the use of x-rays and CT scans. We’ll then schedule your next appointment for the implant to be placed.
Dental implant surgery is performed under local anaesthesia to minimise any discomfort. We can also discuss more sedation options if you have anxiety about dental treatments. If you need a bone grating treatment, this will be require general anaesthesia and a recovery period of several months before your implant can be placed, to give the grafted bone tissue time to fuse with your jaw.
To insert the implant, we need to make a small incision in your gum to access your jaw. We’ll then prepare the site using a dental drill and place the implant directly into your jaw bone. Finally, we’ll close your gum around the implant and cover it with a temporary crown.
We’ll arrange follow-up appointments to check the progress of your implant as it fuses with your jaw bone. When your jaw has completely healed around the implant, we can place a permanent crown made from porcelain or a gold alloy. CEREC porcelain crowns may be designed and manufactured in a single appointment.
What are the risks?
We’ll take care when planning your implant treatment to minimise risks, but we’ll still make sure you understand all the possible complications before you agree to the procedure.
Problems can include infections or bleeding after surgery, nerve damage, or sinus problems if an upper jaw implants enters the sinus cavity.
Dental implants have a longer treatment and recovery time than most dental procedures. If you also need a bone graft, your total treatment time could be up to 6 months.
How do I look after my implants?
Dental implants often don’t have any special maintenance requirements, but we’ll explain any risk factors you may have and let you know steps to care for your oral health. In many cases, as long as you take good care of your oral hygiene by brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing every day and following a nutritious diet, your implant should last for many years.
Implants have a very high success rate, but you’ll increase the risk of your implant failing if you smoke or don’t take good care of your oral health. If your crown gets chipped, cracked or knocked out, make an emergency appointment at our clinic to have it replaced.
How much do dental implants cost?
Dental implants tend to cost more than other tooth replacement options such as dentures and bridges, but they’re also likely to last longer. What are the alternatives to implants?

A dental bridge is an artificial tooth supported by crowns placed over the healthy teeth on both sides of the gap. A bridge can look and feel like a real tooth, but unlike an implant, it doesn’t support your jaw.
